The first unit of the year is always the most important. Because it lays the foundation for the expectations in your class for the rest of the school year. When teaching the Real Number System I like to throw in Real Number System Maze Activities rather than only doing boring math worksheets with just a bunch of problems on paper.
Real Numbers and Their Properties
My students enjoy these activities and work hard on them because it frustrates them if they can't get through the maze. So they will spend extra time trying to figure the problems out because they can not get to the next problem without finishing the one before. Hence forcing them to not quit on a problem and just skip it.
Which is certainly what they would do if it was just a standard worksheet. When you assign these Number System Maze Activities your students will dive right in and start working on them before you finish explaining the directions to them.
Therefore you will need to make sure to set up some guide lines before you pass them out. Finally, I like to make these a competition.
When I assign them I explain to them that when they take their state and standardized tests they will be timed. So I give a reward to the first 3 students to turn them in with all the correct answers to the maze with the appropriate work shown.
